Jean Louis Trintignant, one of France's most revered and famous actors, always dreamt of owning a vineyard. He has fulfilled that dream through a partnership with his old friend Bertrand Cortellini at Domaine Rouge Garance. The estate is located to the west of Avignon, near Remoulins in the village of St. Hilaire d'Ozilhan. The Gard region has similar soils to that of Châteauneuf du Pape. The estate is farmed with minimal chemical treatments, in the style of the French term lutte raisonnée, and all harvesting is done by hand. The grapes that go into Domaine Rouge Garance's Rouge Garance come from the estate's dry farmed, 40 year old Grenache (30%) and Syrah (70%) vines. The vineyard manager for the estate claims that the wine's complexity and power are the result of the vines struggling to reach deep into the estate's poor rocky soil for water and nutrients.
